After the harsh reality of the Second World War, the US was hit with a wave of South Pacific mania, when flower necklaces were de rigeur, cocktails had to be big, flamboyant and served in coconut shells and the only music to listen to at your cocktail soiree was Martin Denny.
The desire for flamboyance and romance hid the ugliness of the past years, replacing it with a mirage of dancing girls and bamboo huts...
